CCTV9英语新闻:World Cup draw provides exciting group stage clashes

Brazil and the world cup draw that has thrown up the usual mix of tantasling and intruiging fixtures.

There are some mouthwatering group stage matches with holders Spain up against the Netherlands first up in Group B while Germany take on Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in their opening match and they’ll also come up against the USA managed by ex-player and coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

But many think the toughest group of all features Uraguay, Italy, England and Costa Rica. But the day began with a tinge of sadness. Dan Williams reports from Brazil.

World Cup draw day… but as the various coaches of the 32 qualified teams gathered in Costa do Saweepie… The sad news of the death of South Africa’s former President, Nelson Mandela, was still sinking in… an icon who was universally adored….

But this was a show that had to go on… And what a show it promised to be with a who’s who of football in attendance. Legendary three time winner Pele the cream of the lot.

But a draw is about the future… and who will be grouped together in June next year.

Even the journalists in the media centre were excited at the prospect of Group D – England drawn to face Uruguay, Italy and Costa Rica..

But that’s not the only mouthwatering prospect… in Group G, Germany will be required to navigate their way past Portugal, Ghana and the USA.
